Totally forgetting that the Legacy has always been pretty simple and best described as “handsome” and worst described as “bland”. I like it. Nothing wrong with a simple and good looking car.

I wouldn’t call it bland. Like most new-er Subarus it just looks dated out of the box, like a 10 year old design that is about to be replaced soon.

The Legacy is what Legacy does. It is not there to surprise you with a radical new direction all of a sudden. And for those who don’t like it,hope hope you don’t plan on buying an Outback because this is exactly how it would look like:
Flash news: The people who actually buy them in the thousands don’t give a shit.

I believe the Straight Pipes called it the “Perfect Dad Car”.

Don’t know if I’d agree with that take of it looking dated. It’s just a simple design, which I feel in the market of swoops and anger, looks outdated by comparison.

I think it has always looked handsome, although the less bloat the better (looking at you 5th gen) .
A manual would make it even more simple and desirable, at least among Oppo . I wonder how a new Legacy ‘XT’ will differ visually from a base model, if at all .

I loved the Legacy GT looks from 2 generations ago, the last generation looks bad. Those fender flairs are terrible looking.

I found this relevant, and funny. From Subaru’s post about the new Legacy

Looks better as an Outback.
But who cares, Subaru has never made a good-looking car. Decent, sure. But nothing that makes you stop and look back

Yuuup. Armchair experts who say they’d buy any new car if it was less ugly/had a manual/was a wagon and wouldn’t buy it new because depreciation is for suckers.

I loved it. If I became a dad tomorrow, that’d be a good dad car (as someone else already said, but I thought that intially but whatever). I’d especially love it in a nice dark green with a champagne color to the wheels.
Basically the L.L. Bean edition but without the gold cladding (maybe some gold accents?)

Too bad that minority is extremely vocal everywhere on the internet, so someone might be almost fooled into thinking this is what most people want.
To be honest if they discontinue the manual in the next WRX/GTI etc it is bad for enthusiasts because it does have a high take rate. But specific to the Legacy, understand the XT is a replacement for the 3.6R NOT the return of the GT. So temper your expectations accordingly people!

As much as I want a Volvo, a newer Outback is more likely to be a dad car for me.

I don’t think they’d discontinue the manual in those models yet . But we might see some form of automatic STi next generation, and the Golf is apparently really good with the DCT.

This for example is a design that doesn’t look unneccessarily angry or swoopy without looking dated.
This would qualify as well.

Every time a Japanese car company known for bland design has tried to do something different (Toyota, Honda), the results have not been at all pleasant. Subaru needs to stick to what’s working for them, bland trumps offensively hideous any day.
